Gerard Butler is miscast as the phantom. Rather then having a soaring tenor voice he growls most of his way through it. It’s clear they cast a lead actor based on looks such as the Phantoms mask being smaller and his disfigurement less. When the mask is ripped off the audiences reaction is laughter and not terror. The Phantom of the Opera is still one of the most popular movies of 2004 and one of the most recognizable musicals of the 2000’s decade! It’s a very dark and slightly gothical portrayal of the famous love story written by Andrew Lloyd Webber that captures the essence of the deformed Phantom but for the rest of the story, we can’t see anything else that is relevant to the original story! Generally positive reception does go to the direction, musical numbers, costumes, production, and the acting!
