Good classic action film that reminds of what big budget cinema should be about; entertainment. Tom Cruise is the last of the movie stars and delivers a straightforward but thrilling in sections film. There isn’t much substance though and if not for the last forty minutes I’d have been disappointed. That section is worth seeing the film for especially as this is mostly all real practical flying and effects. Good movie if not as amazing as is being touted. It just stands out in the garbage we’ve been getting from the likes of marvel and so on.

Rewarding experience for fans of the first film & soundtrack, Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, & the late Tony Scott. It’s unabashedly cheesy, uncynical, & preposterous, & I thoroughly enjoyed it. The centerpiece is the flight sequences, which put the cast in real danger & bring the audience on the ride. The 800 hours of footage, long post production, & rumored reshoots show the effort they put in. Has more emotional beats than you might expect. Follows the outline of #1 probably too closely.

Time proves the classics never die. Topgun has returned and all for the better. It's been a very long time coming and I couldn't be happier to have this style of movie back on the big screen. Embracing it's loud 80s macho style while capturing modern day sensibility is not easy. Maverick makes it look easy. An absolute blast with a fantastic final act. With a feel good ending too. Pure 80s bliss. 8/10
